UK trout and fly-fishing venues

Fly fishing in the UK ranges from small spring-fed trout lakes to large reservoirs where anglers can cover miles of bank or take a boat onto open water. Some fisheries specialise entirely in fly fishing, while others have a dedicated trout lake alongside coarse or specimen waters.

This page is deliberately more selective than a simple search for the word trout. A venue is included only where the information currently held by Fishing Lakes UK explicitly refers to fly fishing, fly anglers, a fly fishery or fly-only fishing.

76 fly-fishing venue listings
43 counties and areas represented
64 with day-ticket or day-permit access listed
27 with boat fishing or boat hire listed
Before travelling: ticket arrangements, stocking, seasons, catch limits and permitted methods can change. Use each venue page as a starting point and check the fishery's latest official information before setting off.

Choosing a venue

What to check before booking a fly-fishing lake

Bank, wading or boat?

Large reservoirs can fish very differently from compact stocked stillwaters. Check whether bank fishing, wading or boats are available and whether particular areas are restricted.

Catch and release or catch ticket?

Trout fisheries use different ticket systems. Some offer catch-and-release options, some include a limited number of retained fish and others publish separate rules for different waters.

Check the permitted methods

A venue may be fly-only, while another may allow fly, spinning or bait fishing on different lakes or at different times. Never assume the rules are identical across a multi-water fishery.

Booking and permits

Some fisheries allow anglers to arrive and buy a ticket, while reservoirs, club waters and boat fisheries may require advance booking, membership or a separate permit.

Facilities and tuition

Beginners may benefit from a venue offering tuition, rod hire or a staffed lodge. Our current records identify 22 fly-fishing listings where tuition, coaching or similar support is mentioned.

Hooks and fishery rules

Hook type, fish handling, kill limits and catch-and-release rules vary between fisheries. Read the current venue rules before tying on your first fly.

Common questions

Fly fishing lakes FAQ

Are all trout lakes fly-fishing lakes?

No. Some trout fisheries permit bait fishing or spinning, and methods can vary between individual lakes at the same venue. That is why this directory page requires explicit fly-fishing information rather than including every venue that simply lists trout.

Can beginners use fly-fishing lakes?

Yes, but some venues are more beginner-friendly than others. Fisheries offering tuition, tackle hire, smaller stocked waters or staff support can make a first session much easier.

Can I fly fish from a boat?

Many reservoir and larger stillwater fisheries offer boat fishing, but availability and booking arrangements vary. Check the individual venue before travelling, particularly if a boat is essential to your planned session.

What flies should I take?

That depends on the water, season, feeding depth and conditions. Our fly fishing flies guide explains the main fly types and how to make a sensible choice when you arrive.
