About Bangour Trout Fishery

Bangour Trout Fishery is a traditional fly-only stillwater in the Bathgate Hills near Dechmont, around 17 miles west of Edinburgh. The reservoir covers approximately 12.5 acres, with about seven acres maintained for fishing, and is stocked with rainbow and blue trout. Fishing is from numbered wooden platforms, allowing anglers to explore water ranging from shallow margins to depths approaching 30 feet along the dam wall. Catch-and-release and catch-and-keep tickets are offered, but bait fishing is not permitted. Current rules require barbless or de-barbed flies, limit anglers to one rod and require use of the fishery-provided landing nets. The venue has 33 platforms for a maximum of 28 anglers, including two wider wheelchair-accessible piers. Facilities include hard-surface parking, toilets, a fishing lodge with seating and refreshments, and a small tackle shop. Booking online or confirming availability before arrival is advisable because capacity and opening days are restricted. The fishery currently advertises Sunday-only opening until further notice, so anglers should check the official website for the latest schedule before travelling.
