About Loch Fad Fishery

Loch Fad Fishery is a large freshwater loch near Rothesay on the Isle of Bute, offering both trout and predator fishing in scenic island surroundings. The 175-acre water is stocked with rainbow trout and also holds brown trout, pike, perch, roach and eels. Its shallower ends provide useful fly water as conditions warm, while boats allow anglers to cover the wider loch. The fishery publishes day and shorter-session permits for trout, with bank and boat options covering fly fishing, bait fishing and spinning. Separate pike permits are available and all pike must be returned safely. The venue supplies appropriate landing nets and unhooking mats for pike anglers, and biosecurity measures apply to fishing equipment. Visitors should check the current tariff, permitted methods and availability before travelling, particularly when hiring a boat. The loch is approximately a ten-minute drive from the Rothesay ferry terminal, with the final approach signposted from the town. Anglers travelling from the mainland should also allow time for the CalMac crossing to Bute and confirm the current ferry timetable. Loch Fad is especially useful for anglers looking to combine a Scottish trout or pike session with a visit to the island.
