Bessy Beck Trout Fishery at Newbiggin-on-Lune near Kirkby Stephen offers bank fly fishing across the spring-fed Island, Heron and Mallard lakes. The clear waters vary from roughly four to 11 feet deep and are stocked from the fishery's own rearing facility with triploid rainbow and blue trout; wild brown trout are also present and must be returned. Most stocked fish weigh between 2lb and 5lb, with double-figure trout caught regularly. All three lakes are fly only, barbless or de-barbed hooks are required, and fish above 5lb must be released. Catch-and-release and take-ticket options are available, and every angler needs a current Environment Agency rod licence. The fishery opens from 8am to dusk, Tuesday to Sunday, throughout the year when weather permits. Facilities include parking, toilets, a tackle shop, changing room, heated lodge and rod hire.
