North Met Pit at Fishers Green near Waltham Abbey is a 58-acre Lee Valley gravel pit managed by Lee Valley Fisheries. A causeway divides the water, with fish able to pass between the sections through a large pipe. The main 45-acre lake has open water, bays, islands, spits and channels, while the wild 13-acre northern section is more overgrown and snaggy. Gravel bars, silt and reed beds provide varied features. The stock includes specimen carp to 50lb, with newer fish already reaching the mid and upper thirties. Access is limited to 80 members holding day-and-night season permits, and prospective members should check prices, availability and waiting lists. Up to three rods are allowed and fishing on the main lake is from numbered swims. Permit holders receive the combination for the Fishers Green anglers' car park; reaching some areas involves a long walk, although formal paths serve much of the main lake. Crayfish are present, so hardened or artificial hookbaits may help. General rules require valid permits, clean and dry fish-care equipment, attended rods and removal of all litter. Swimming, wading, boats, open fires and barbecues are prohibited.
